Chief Patron Del. Michelle Maldonado's bipartisan HB699 was signed into law by Gov. Youngkin on April 4. The legislation was drafted in partnership with PreventOpioidAbuse.org.
Virginia joins 20 other states helping to address the opioid crisis by requiring certain actions from medical professionals who prescribe opioids. HB699 requires that medical professionals inform patients (or their parent/guardian) when a medication is an opioid, that they inform them that opioids are addictive; and that they counsel them on non-opioid alternatives.
Maldonado commented, "Patients and parents have the right to know if an opioid is being prescribed—and, now, in Virginia, they will!"
