A bill for which Del. Michelle Maldonado was Chief Patron was just signed into law by Gov. Youngkin. HB987, a bipartisan bill which passed unanimously in the Virginia House of Delegates, makes clear that insurance carriers can't hold proton radiation therapy to a higher standard of clinical evidence than other types of radiation therapy treatment. The new law also sets forth clinical standards to justify coverage helping to save lives.
Noting that the legislation holds personal significance, Maldonado stated: "My father is a 3x cancer survivor and successfully underwent proton cancer therapy late last year. Chances are, you, someone you love, or someone you know, has been affected by cancer. Many don't have access to or know about proton cancer therapy as a treatment option."
Maldonado went on to thank those who traveled to Richmond to testify in support of the bill, including the Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute, her staff, and her father.
